PLATINUM DENTAL CARE
Teeth whitening
Professional whitening supervised by a dentist — not an off-the-shelf kit from the chemist. We check your teeth and gums first, because whitening over a cavity or inflamed gums does more harm than good. Only then do we decide which method suits your teeth.
Whitening works on your own enamel. Crowns, veneers and white fillings do not change colour — which is exactly why we look first and whiten afterwards.
Why teeth discolour
The outer layer of your tooth is enamel; underneath sits the darker dentine. How thick and how smooth that enamel is determines how much of the darker layer shows through. It varies from person to person and is partly hereditary.
On top of that comes everyday staining. Coffee, tea, red wine, cola and smoking leave pigment in the small pores of the enamel. That kind of discolouration sits on the outside and usually responds well to whitening.
Discolouration can also come from within. A tooth that took a knock or had a root canal treatment sometimes turns grey. Certain medicines can do the same. Those teeth respond differently — sometimes whitening from the inside works, sometimes a veneer or crown is the better answer.
And there is age. Enamel thins over the years while the dentine darkens, so teeth gradually lose their brightness. That is normal and not a sign that something is wrong.
How we whiten, and what to expect
We start with a check-up and usually a cleaning: the whitening agent works more evenly on a clean tooth. Then we discuss the method. Whitening at the practice is faster; home whitening with custom-made trays works more gradually and gives you more control over the final shade.
Sensitive teeth are the most common side effect. It is temporary and normally passes within a few days; if your teeth are sensitive we adjust the strength or the pace.
Staying realistic helps: whitening lifts your teeth several shades, not to porcelain white. The result holds for one to a few years, depending on coffee, tea and smoking. If you have crowns or veneers in your smile, we discuss the colour difference beforehand — sometimes it is wiser to whiten first and replace those crowns afterwards.
