PLATINUM DENTAL CARE

Root canal treatment

An inflamed nerve does not mean the tooth has to come out. In a root canal treatment we remove the inflamed tissue, clean the canals and seal them — so you keep your own tooth. And your own tooth still beats any replacement.

    When it is needed

Every tooth holds a nerve with blood vessels. If a cavity goes untreated for too long, or a tooth takes a hard knock, that tissue can become inflamed. What you notice: persistent throbbing pain, teeth that stay sensitive long after something hot or cold, or pain when you bite down.

Sometimes you notice nothing at all and we only see it on an X-ray, once the inflammation below the root has already spread. Treating it is sensible then too: a quiet inflammation does not clear up on its own.

    How the treatment goes

The tooth is anaesthetised and isolated with a rubber dam, so no saliva reaches the canals. We then open the tooth, remove the inflamed tissue and clean and shape the canals. X-rays along the way confirm that we reach the end of every root.

Once the canals are clean we fill and seal them. Depending on the tooth and the extent of the inflammation, that takes one or two appointments.

Afterwards the tooth is drier and more brittle than before. For molars we almost always advise a crown: it absorbs the chewing load and stops the tooth splitting later. We make that crown in our own laboratory here in Lemiers.

    Does it hurt?

The treatment itself does not — the tooth is numb. The unpleasant pain usually comes before the appointment, caused by the inflammation, and it eases afterwards.

On a badly inflamed tooth the anaesthetic sometimes takes less well. We know that and there are ways around it: additional anaesthetic, or settling the inflammation down first and treating afterwards. Do say if you are dreading it — then we take our time.

For a few days after, the tooth can be tender when you bite. That is part of it and settles by itself. If the pain persists or gets worse, call us and we will take another look.
